Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: un- prefix1, sib n.2; Old English ungesibb.
Etymology: Either (i) < un- prefix1 + sib n.2, or (ii) shortened < a use as noun of Old English ungesibb (adjective) not related ( < un- prefix1 + ysibbe adj.). Compare Old High German unsippi, unsibbi (adjective) not related, unfriendly (Middle High German unsippe), and Gothic unsibjis (adjective) ungodly, iniquitous, lawless (also as noun).Old English ungesibb (adjective) is attested in the senses ‘not related’ (also figurative) and ‘not at peace, at variance’ (with the latter compare unsib n.1 and un-i-sib n.); also (in plural) in apparent use as noun in the sense ‘non-relatives’ (in an isolated example as part of a riddle (describing a cuckoo) using anthropomorphic imagery):OE Riddle 9 8 Oþþæt ic under sceate, swa min gesceapu wæron, ungesibbum wearð eacen gæste.
Obsolete.
