Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: unpen v., -ed suffix1; un- prefix1, pen v.1, -ed suffix1.
Etymology: Probably partly < unpen v. + -ed suffix1, and partly < un- prefix1 + pen v.1 + -ed suffix1. Compare later penned adj.3
Not shut up in a pen; unenclosed. Also occasionally: †that has been released from a pen (obsolete).
