Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: un- prefix2, pen v.1
Etymology: < un- prefix2 (compare and- prefix) + pen v.1 (although this is first attested later). Compare unpend v.Re-formed in the 16th cent.
1. transitive. To open (a pen or other enclosure). Also in extended use. Now rare.
