Etymology: < un- prefix1 + needy adj. Compare Middle High German unnōtec not needy or poor (German unnötig (now regional (Switzerland) in sense ‘not needy or poor’, in standard German now only in sense ‘unnecessary’). With the use as noun compare earlier needy n.Compare also Old English unnīedige (adverb) without compulsion or constraint, willingly ( < un- prefix1 + needy adj. (compare needy adj. 1) + Old English -e, suffix forming adverbs).
