A keyword describing the subject matter of a document, which when occurring as part of an alphabetical index enables documents relating to a particular topic or combination of topics to be retrieved (see quot. 1973). Frequently attributive, esp. in Uniterm system: an indexing system employing such keywords.The Uniterm system of indexing was invented by Mortimer Taube (1910–65).

To answer a query, the computer withdraws from the file those documents represented by the numbers found with the Uniterms. For example, to locate information on ‘adult keyboard primers’ the three terms ‘adult’, ‘keyboard’, and ‘primer’ would be selected from the Uniterm list.
