Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish unitario.
Etymology: < American Spanish unitario (c1840 in this sense in a source from Argentina), specific use of Spanish unitario unitary (see unitary n.). Compare Unitarian n. 2.
Now historical. Chiefly in plural.
In Argentina in the early and mid 19th cent.: an advocate or supporter of a centralized (rather than devolved or federal) system of government. Cf. federales n. 1.
