(with loss of the prefix of the second element); in later use partly shortened < α. forms (with loss of the unstressed medial syllable) and partly directly < un- prefix1 + lered adj. Compare later unlearned adj.With the α. forms compare Middle Dutch ongheleert (Dutch ongeleerd ), Middle Low German ungelēret , ungelērt , Old High German ungalērit (Middle High German ungelērt , German ungelehrt ). With the β. forms compare Middle Low German unlēret, Old Icelandic úlærðr (Icelandic ólærður), Old Swedish olärdher (Swedish olärd).
