Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian unlond , unland , Middle Dutch onlant (Dutch onland ), Middle Low German unlant ( > German Unland (16th cent.; rare before 19th cent.)), all in sense ‘land unfit for cultivation, wasteland’, and Old Icelandic úland foreign land < the Germanic base of un- prefix1 + the Germanic base of land n.1 Compare also Old Frisian unlende (adjective) bottomless, deep.
Obsolete.
1. False or illusory land. rare.In quot. with reference to the back of a sea monster mistaken for land by mariners.
