Compare later brusery n.Although the early forms might appear to suggest a borrowing from Anglo-Norman, no etymon has been traced. It is possible that the form in quot. 1484 should be interpreted as showing Anglo-Norman, but the example has been accepted here as Older Scots in the light of the earlier evidence (it is not uncommon for the French article le to precede an English word in documents of this type). With β. forms compare -ar suffix².
