Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown.Various etymological suggestions have been offered, e.g.: (i) a borrowing < a word for ‘wild’ or ‘wild horse’ in one of various Australian Aboriginal languages spoken in Queensland or New South Wales; (ii) a borrowing < Irish bromaigh, plural of bromach colt; (iii) a derivation < the common Australian surname Brumby, although the precise connection is unclear (it has often been suggested that this surname was borne by a horsebreaker who was also a professional soldier); (iv) a derivation < Baramba, the name of a creek and station in the Burnett district of Queensland.
