Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Greenlandic Inuit. Partly a borrowing from Eastern Canadian Inuit. Etymons: Greenlandic Inuit umiaq, Eastern Canadian Inuit umiaq.
Etymology: < Greenlandic Inuit umiaq and its cognate Eastern Canadian Inuit umiaq. (In later use in other regions perhaps sometimes reborrowed from cognates in related languages.) Compare kayak n.Compare the following slightly earlier example of the Greenlandic Inuit word in an English context, from the same source as quot. 1767 at kayak n. 1:1767 tr. D. Cranz Hist. Greenland I. iii. i. 148 The great boat, or Women's boat, called in Greenlandic umiak, is commonly 6, nay 8 or 9 fathom long, 4 or 5 foot wide, and 3 deep.
A fairly large, open boat made from a light wooden frame over which the skins of walruses or seals are stretched, used by the indigenous peoples inhabiting Canada, Greenland, Alaska, and the Russian Far East for the transportation of goods and people, and for hunting and whaling.The umiak is propelled using single-bladed paddles, a sail, or, more recently, a motor.The umiak is sometimes referred to as the women's boat (see e.g. quots. 1767 and 1769) as it was typically used by women for transportation.
