Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin typhomania.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin typhomania delirium (1549 or earlier) < ancient Greek τυϕωμανία (Hippocrates, Galen) < τῦϕος (see typhus n.) + -μανία -mania comb. form. In later use probably reinterpreted as < typho- comb. form + -mania comb. form. In β. forms after French typhomanie (1639 or earlier).
Medicine. Now historical.
Delirium occurring in a patient who is also lethargic or stuporous; spec. that occurring in typhus, typhoid, and other infectious diseases (cf. typhoid state n. at typhoid adj. and n. Compounds 1). In later use also: severe acute mania.
