Etymology: < Greek τυμπανίζειν to beat a drum, < τύμπανον tympanum n.; or late Latin tympanizāre (in medieval Latin in sense 1b below); compare French tympaniser (16th cent.), to proclaim or decry loudly, Portuguese tympanisar (med.).
Obsolete.
