Etymology: Probably a transmission error for either unagunnen or unaginninde ( < un- prefix¹ + respectively agunnen and aginninde , past and present participle of agin v.). See further S. R. T. O. d'Ardenne Þe Liflade ant te Passiun of Seinte Iuliene (1961) 169, who speculates that the word in the Bodley manuscript of St. Juliana (it does not appear in the corresponding passage in the Royal manuscript) may possibly have been derived from the already corrupt reading in St. Margaret in the common source of both manuscripts.Compare the use of unagunnen in a similar context in Old English:OE Ælfric Catholic Homilies: 2nd Ser. Alternative explanations are discussed (and discounted) by d'Ardenne (including the suggestion by F. M. Mack in her edition of St. Margaret (see quot. c1225¹) that the correct reading is godd-imagin, an otherwise unattested compound in the sense ‘divine image’).
