Etymology: < Swahili ujamaa, denoting a political ideology developed by Julius Nyerere in the 1950s and 1960s (see definition), specific use of ujamaa the state of being a family < u- , class prefix forming abstract nouns + jamaa family, society < Arabic jamāʿa group (of people), community (see jamaat n.). Compare familyhood n. 2.

A form of African socialism implemented in Tanzania by Julius Nyerere, the country's first president (1964–85), whose central policies included the creation of a one-party state, the nationalization of key economic sectors, and the establishment of collective farming villages; = familyhood n. 2.
