Origin: An imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Imitative. Compare earlier uh-huh adv. and the following note on the utterances: 1982 J. C. Wells Accents of English III. vi. 556 There are also the grunts sometimes spelt uh-huh and uh-uh respectively. The first, ‘yes’, is phonetically [ˈə̃hə̃, ˈʌ̃hʌ̃, ˈmm̥m], hence nasal or nasalized ... The second, ‘no’, is [ˈʔəʔˈʔə, ˈʔʌ̃ʔˈʔʌ, ˈʔmʔˈm]; it is not necessarily nasal, and has an accented final syllable.
colloquial (originally U.S.).
Used to express negation, disagreement, or refusal: ‘no’. Cf. nuh-uh adv., uh-huh adv.
