释义

twit-twatadj.n.

Forms: 1600s twit-twot, 1600s twit-twat.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: twittle-twattle adj.
Etymology: Apparently shortened < twittle-twattle adj., perhaps after twit v. (compare sense 2 at that entry). Compare earlier twittle-twattle n. and slightly earlier twittle-twat n. N.E.D. (1916) includes a sense ‘A name for the house-sparrow’, based on an entry in the Century Dictionary (1891), but the only evidence of use appears to be in A. J. Thébaud’s allegory The Twit-Twats (1881), in which Twit-Twat is the proper name of a family of sparrows rather than a general term.1881 A. J. Thébaud Twit-twats ii. 12 New York was already full of sparrows when the Twit-Twats came upon the scene.
Obsolete.
