Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English *unbewēne.
Etymology: Probably the reflex of an unattested Old English *unbewēne, an alteration of unwēne unween adj., after the unattested Old English verb *bewēnan (see note). Compare Old High German unbiwānlīh unexpected, and also Middle Low German bewāne (adverb) probably.Old English *bewēnan is cognate with Old Frisian biwēna to expect, Old Dutch biwānen to suspect (Middle Dutch bewānen to suppose, imagine, expect, suspect), Old Saxon biwānian (reflexive) to think oneself capable of (Middle Low German bewānen to suspect), Old High German biwānen to suppose, imagine, hope, expect (Middle High German bewænen to suspect) < the Germanic base of be- prefix + the Germanic base of ween v.
