Etymology: < Udmurt udmurt, self-designation (first half of the 18th cent. in German and Russian contexts; also udmort, utmort) < a first element of uncertain origin (perhaps < an Iranian word in the sense ‘border, march, something located at or across a border’ < the same Indo-European base as end n.) + murt human, man ( < an Iranian noun in the sense ‘human’, originally ‘mortal’: see the list of Indo-European cognates at murder n.1; compare Mari n. and Mordvin n., both probably ultimately derived < cognate forms of the same word in Iranian languages). Compare Votyak n.Compare Russian udmurt (1878 or earlier as †udmort′′; plural udmurty). Compare the following earlier example of the Udmurt word in an English context:1822 F. Shoberl Russia I. vi. 255 The Wotyakes, who call themselves Udy or Udmort,..reside in the government of Casan and in part of that of Orenburg.

1. A member of a Finno-Ugric people inhabiting the Ural mountain region of the Udmurt Republic in Russia.Both the people and their language (see sense A. 2) were formerly known as Votyak; the term is still used occasionally but is not generally favoured by the Udmurt themselves.
