Etymology: < German U-Boot (1911 or earlier), short for Unterseeboot submarine (1885 or earlier; < untersee undersea, submarine (see under-sea adj.) + Boot boat: see boat n.¹), with alteration of the second element after boat n.¹

A German military submarine, esp. one used in the First World War (1914–18) or Second World War (1939–45). N.E.D. (1921) describes the word as ‘In recent use (1913–)’.
