Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin āctuārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin āctuārius shorthand writer, keeper of records or accounts, in post-classical Latin specifically with reference to the Convocation of the Province of Canterbury (1533 in a British source) < āctus (see act n.) + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare French actuaire (in ancient Rome) shorthand secretary (1749), (in the ancient Roman army) clerk responsible for accountancy, supplies, etc. (1842), specialist in calculating probabilities applicable to insurance (1872, after English), Catalan actuari (1702), Spanish actuario (1617), Portuguese atuário (19th cent., after English).In sense 1 in the Dutch Reformed Church immediately after Afrikaans actuarius, itself < Latin; compare also South African English actuarius in this sense, recorded from the first half of the 19th cent. onwards. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ·ktiuări) /ˈæktjuːərɪ/.
