单词 tzimmes
释义

tzimmesn.

Brit. /ˈtsɪmᵻs/, U.S. /ˈtsɪməs/
Inflections: Plural unchanged.
Forms: 1800s tzimmus, 1800s–1900s tzimmas, 1900s– tsimes, 1900s– tsimis, 1900s– tsimmes, 1900s– tsimmis, 1900s– tsimmus, 1900s– tzimes, 1900s– tzimis, 1900s– tzimmes, 1900s– tzimmis, 1900s– zimes.
Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish tsimes.
Etymology: < Yiddish tsimes stew of sweetened vegetables or vegetables and fruit (typically eaten on the Sabbath), also (in extended use) fuss, probably ultimately < Middle High German z'imbīz ‘as a meal’ < z , variant (before a vowel) of zuo to prep. + imbīz meal (see below). Compare German regional (Switzerland) Zimmes, Zimis meal, snack (16th cent.), which ultimately reflects the Middle High German phrase z'imbīz, and may have been the proximate etymon of the Yiddish word.Further etymology. Middle High German imbīz (German Imbiss , now only in the sense ‘snack’, which is attested since the 16th cent.) is a variant (with consonantal assimilation) of inbīz (Old High German imbīz , inbīz ) < inbīzan to consume a meal < in- in- prefix1 + bīzan bite v. Alternative suggestions for the etymology of the Yiddish word all appear to be speculative and influenced by folk etymology. One such suggestion derives Yiddish tsimes < tsim esn to a meal, as part of a meal ( < tsim to the ( < tsu < Middle High German zuo to prep.) + esn meal, use as noun of esn to eat ( < Middle High German ezzen eat v.)). A connection with German mischen to mix (see the etymological note at mix v.) has sometimes also been suggested, but is unlikely on formal grounds. Specific collocations. In to make a tsimmes at sense 2 after Yiddish makhn a tsimes, in the same sense.
