释义

twilltweeln.1

Brit. /twɪl/, U.S. /twɪl/ /twiːl/
Forms: α. Middle English twyle, 1500s twile; Middle English twyll (1500s tywell), Middle English–1500s twylle (1500s tywlle, tyll, tylle), Middle English– twill (1600s tuill). β. Middle English twel, 1500s tweal-, 1600s Scottish tueill, tueile, 1700s– (originally Scottish) tweel.
Etymology: Northern and Scots forms of twĭle twilly adj. and n.1, with normal dropping of the final -e, and (especially in Scots) lengthening of original ĭ to ē in the stem-syllable: compare the Scots forms of the verbs swill, till.
a. A woven fabric characterized by parallel diagonal ridges or ribs, produced by causing the weft threads to pass over one and under two or more threads of the warp, instead of over and under in regular succession, as in plain weaving.
