单词 tumbaga
释义

tumbagan.

Brit. /tʊmˈbɑːɡə/, U.S. /tumˈbɑɡə/
Forms: 1800s– tumbaga, 1800s– tumbago.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish tumbaga.
Etymology: < Spanish tumbaga copper alloy imported from South East Asia (1737 or earlier; also alloy of gold, silver, and copper (1748 or earlier), any metal (1884)), probably ultimately < Malay tembaga , tambaga copper alloy (see tombac n.).The immediate etymon of the Spanish form is uncertain, and the vowel of the first syllable is unexplained. Compare Portuguese tumbaque alloy of copper and zinc, also alloy of gold and silver (1836). With reference to the alloy used in South East Asia, compare post-classical Latin tumbaga (1699 or earlier) and also the following (apparently isolated) earlier borrowing of Italian †tumbaga (1699 in the passage translated):1704 tr. G. F. Gemelli Careri Voy. round World iii. v, in A. Churchill & J. Churchill Coll. Voy. IV. 385/2 Certain rings of Tumbaga [It. Tumbaga], worn by the Portugueses of Macao;..the Spaniards value these Rings, and buy them very dear. This Tumbaga is made of many Metals run together.
Any of various alloys of copper and gold used for jewellery and ornamental objects in Central and South America. Cf. tombac n. 1.
