Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly a borrowing from Turkana. Partly from a proper name. Etymons: German Turkana, Turkana -turkana; proper name Lake Turkana, proper name Turkana County.
Etymology: Originally (i) < German Turkana (1892 in the passage translated in quot. 1894) and its etymon Turkana -turkana (compare Ng’iturkana , denoting the people (singular Eturkanait ), and Ng’aturkana , denoting the language) < Turkan , the name of the region traditionally inhabited by this people, now the Turkana County in north-western Kenya. In sense A. 3 (ii) via the name of either Lake Turkana (Swahili Ziwa Turkana: see note), or the Turkana County (Swahili Kaunti ya Turkana) on the west bank of this lake.Lake Turkana is situated in the Great Rift Valley, mostly within Kenya, but also extending north into Ethiopia; it was formerly known in English as Lake Rudolf (after German Rudolfsee ). Nariokotome, where the Turkana boy skeleton was found (see sense A. 3), is situated in the Turkana County of Kenya, near the bank of the lake; compare Nariokotome n.

3. Palaeontology. As a modifier. Designating the most complete known skeleton of an early fossil hominid, a young male of Homo ergaster (or African H. erectus) discovered at Nariokotome near Lake Turkana, Kenya, in 1984, and dated to about 1.5 million years ago; of or relating to this find. Esp. in Turkana boy (also called Nariokotome boy).
