Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish tokhes.
Etymology: < Yiddish tokhes (also transliterated tukhes, toches, etc.; see note) < post-biblical Hebrew tāḥaṯ, pausal form of taḥaṯ bottom, backside, use as noun of (already biblical) taḥaṯ under, beneath. The variation in the first-syllable vowel of the Yiddish etymon reflects dialectal differences; northern dialects of Yiddish have /o/, while southern dialects have /ʊ/, and the Yiddish word as a whole reflects an Ashkenazic pronunciation of its Hebrew etymon. Pronunciations in English have either /x/ or /k/ as the medial consonant (the former reflecting the pronunciation in Yiddish more closely), and either /əʊ/ or /ʊ/ as the vowel in the first syllable.
colloquial (chiefly North American and in Jewish usage).
A person's buttocks; the bottom, the backside. Also: the anus; the rectum.Recorded earliest in attributive use.
