Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: unlike adj., -ness suffix, un- prefix1, likeness n.
Etymology: In sense 1 < unlike adj. + -ness suffix, originally after classical Latin dissimilitūdō dissimilitude n. (see note). In sense 2 < un- prefix1 + likeness n.In sense 1 usually translating or alluding to post-classical Latin regio dissimilitudinis (end of the 5th cent.) as used by St Augustine and others with reference to the dissimilarity of the world to heaven, and to the idea of life on earth as a pilgrimage in an alien land.
