Etymology: Shortened form of Old English twégen, Middle English tweyen, twain adj. and n., the final n being normally dropped. Old English twége seems not to be recorded in West Saxon, but it occurs in Anglian in Rushworth Gospel Gloss., and in the late Hatton Gospel before a consonant, and is the ordinary form in Old Northumbrian (varying in Lindisfarne Gloss. as twoege , tuoge , tueg , tuoe , twoe , tue ; Rit. Dunelm. has tvoegi , twoego ). These forms are not rigidly confined to the masculine. From the Old English twége (or by similar shortening of Middle English tweyen , tweien ) came Middle English tweye , twei(e , twey in Midland and Southern English, twai , tway in Northern and North-Midland. But tway in Scotch from c1500 may also be only a variant spelling of the later twae < twā , two adj., n., and adv.: the Scots forms have therefore been separated as γ. Even as an archaism the form is now rarely employed.
Numeral adjective. = two adj., n., and adv. Now archaic.
