Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Danish lexical item. Etymons: truth n., man n.1
Etymology: < the genitive of truth n. + man n.1, partly after Danish sandemand (plural sandemænd ), reflex of Old Danish sannendeman , lit. ‘truth man’, the title of a class of official in Danish law, first attested in the Laws of Jutland (1241) < sannende (plural) truth, proof (a derivative of the same base as sandær true: see sooth adj.) + man man n.1 N.E.D. (1915) gives the pronunciation as (trū·þsmæ̆n) /ˈtruːθsmən/.
Obsolete.
A truthful man; a man characterized by or concerned with truth.In quots. 1832 and 1921 translating the title of a legal official in medieval Denmark.
