Etymology: < French trimère (1810 (1807 as triméré ), designating beetles with tarsi composed of three segments, < ancient Greek τριμερής tripartite (in Aristotle et al.)) + -ous suffix. Compare -merous comb. form. The graphic abbreviation 3-merous in quot. 1857 at sense a may represent a separate word with the pronunciation /ˈθriːmərəs/ (compare five-merous adj.).
