Etymology: Of obscure origin; usually compared with Old French troncer , troncher , Cotgrave troncir , tronchir to cut, cut off a piece from, retrench, < tronce , tronche stump or stock of wood (14th cent. in Godefroy): compare tronc trunk n., and tronçon truncheon n. But the Old French and English verbs do not agree in sense. See also Eng. Dial. Dict.
