true oxlip
Any of several plants intermediate in appearance between the cowslip, Primula veris, and the primrose, P. vulgaris, resembling the cowslip in having umbellate flowers on a common scape, but in the form of the individual flowers appearing closer to the primrose: (a) (originally, in full false oxlip) a natural hybrid between the cowslip and the primrose, which has corolla-lobes less concave than the cowslip but of a deeper yellow than the primrose; (also) a caulescent form of the primrose; (b) (in later use also, more fully true oxlip) a woodland plant, Primula elatior, widespread in continental Europe but now rare in Britain, having drooping umbels of pale yellow flowers. Bardfield oxlip n. now historical the true oxlip, Primula elatior, (first discovered in 1842 at Great Bardfield, Essex).
