单词 trithing
释义

trithingthrithingn.

/ˈtrʌɪðɪŋ/ /ˈθraɪðɪŋ/
Forms: Middle English triting, Middle English, 1700s–1800s trithing, 1600s trithinge, 1700s triding; Middle English thrythyng, 1600s–1700s thrithing: see also riding n.2
Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian. Etymon: Norse þriðjung-r.
Etymology: Late Old English *þriðing , *þriding , < Old Norse þriðjung-r third part, < þriði third: see -ing suffix3, with the initial consonant subsequently absorbed by the preceding -t or -th of east, west, north, south. The form thrithing was still known to the 17th cent. legal writers; but trithing is also found in early times, and in modern legal and historical works. Compare post-classical Latin trehinga, trehigga, tringa (1130–5), þrihingum, trehingum, trihingum (a1159), tridinga (a1200), tredingum (1268), trithingum, thrithingum (c1290, 1393) administrative district, all in British sources. Compare also post-classical Latin trithingum, thrithingum (1114, 15th cent.), tridingum (a1170, 1353), tredingum (1202), trehengum (1204), treinga, treingum (1222, 1228), trethinga, trethingum (1226, 1330), triyngum (1275), trehingus (1292), triyngia (1298), court of the trithing or suit thereat, all in British sources. For a discussion of the forms see A. Mawer & F. M. Stenton Introd. Surv. Eng. Place-names (1924) 109–10. Occurrences of the word in Old English are only in Latin contexts in transcriptions by Anglo-Norman scribes. The expected Old English form *þriðing or *þriding is not attested.?c1136 Leges Edwardi Confessoris xxxi, in F. Liebermann Gesetze der Angelsachsen (1903) I. 653 Erant etiam alie potestates super wapentagiis, quas trehingas uocabant, scilicet super terciam partem prouincie.1215 in W.
