Etymology: < German Tropiliden (A. Ladenburg 1881, in Berichte der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft 14 2403) < trop- (in Tropin tropine n.) + -iliden , apparently a variant of -yliden -ylidene comb. form.With the form tropilidine compare -idine suffix.

Chemistry.

A liquid unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbon whose molecule has a seven-membered ring, first obtained by distilling tropine. Cf. tropylium n.The tropilidine ring contains three double bonds. Systematic name: cycloheptatriene; C₇H₈.
