1971 Times 2 Nov. 14/8 In Brazil the name of Caetano Veloso, leading exponent of ‘tropicalia’ music, is as familiar as the footballer Pélé.
1980 Jrnl. Pop. Culture 14 448 In the words of Veloso, the theoretical spokesman of the group, Tropicália or ‘tropicalismo’ was a neo-cultural cannibalism or ‘anthropophagism’, referring to Oswald de Andrade's Manifesto antropofágico [Anthropophagic Manifesto] of 1928.
1991 Nation (N.Y.) 20 May 676/3 The rich mix of Portuguese folk melodies, wickedly curving Indian tunes and the African heritage of percussive firestorms..created fascinating offshoots that tropicalia could draw upon.
1999 Newsweek 12 July 67/3 Veloso..was part of Brazil's Tropicalia movement, an anarchic collection of artists, writers and musicians who advocated cannibalizing from folk culture, pop culture and foreign culture.
2013 West 86th 20 113 Although now perceived as primarily a music phenomenon..Tropicália had a broader political and social agenda that resulted in many of the leading figures being dispersed through imprisonment and exile.
