Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: tropho- comb. form, -genic comb. form.
Etymology: < tropho- comb. form + -genic comb. form. In sense 1 after French trophogénique (1915 (in the passage translated in quot. 1922) or earlier), perhaps itself after German trophogen (1906 or earlier in this sense). In sense 2 after German trophogen (1910 or earlier in this sense); compare tropholytic adj. 2.
1. Entomology. Determined by or dependent upon feeding habits or diet.Used with reference to the determination of caste in social insects.
