Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: Greek τροϕή , -i- connective, Greek λέγειν , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek τροϕή nourishment (see tropho- comb. form) + -i- connective + ancient Greek λέγειν to gather, to collect (see lexis n.) + -ic suffix, after Italian trofilegico (G. Arcangeli 1889, in Giornale botanico italiano 21 272). N.E.D. (1915) gives the pronunciation as (trǫfile·dʒik) /trɒfɪˈlɛdʒɪk/.
Botany. Obsolete. rare.
Involved in or concerned with the collection of nutrients or water.

1889 Jrnl. Royal Microsc. Soc. 670 Prof. G. Arcangeli..points out that the presence of leaves of a shell-like form is not peculiar to ferns, but occurs also in many flowering plants; the function of these leaves being, if not the direct absorption of water, the collection of food material... He proposes for this function..the term trophilegic.
1898 Nature 3 Nov. 15/1 The trophilegic action of the fronds [of ferns], in connection with which certain arrangements have been observed, destined to facilitate the passage of water to the roots.
