Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish trombenik.
Etymology: < Yiddish trombenik braggart, (in extended use) sponger, parasite, literally ‘trumpeter’ < trombe trumpet, horn (see note) + -nik -nik suffix. With the sense development from ‘trumpeter’ to ‘braggart’, compare to blow one's own trumpet at trumpet n. 3, and also fanfaron n.Yiddish trombe is probably < Polish trąba trumpet (15th cent. in Old Polish), reflecting an early Slavonic loan (compare Old Church Slavonic trǫba in the same sense) ultimately < a Romance language (compare French trompe : see trump n.1), perhaps via a Germanic language (compare Old High German trumba).
U.S. slang (originally and chiefly in Jewish usage).
A person who lives off the generosity of others, a sponger; (more generally) a person who is idle, dissolute, disreputable, or worthless. Also: a boastful or arrogant loudmouth; a braggart.
