Etymology: < German Trevira (1956 or earlier), apparently < post-classical Latin Treveri (4th cent.), the name in Latin of Trier.The name Trevira was entered in the trademark register in 1932 by Adolf Kämpf, director of an artificial silk factory in Böbingen, near Augsburg. He apparently thought the Latin name of Augsburg was post-classical Latin Augusta Treverorum (9th cent.; compare Aug. Tresvirorum (4th cent. on an ancient map)), but in fact this is the name of Trier, while the name of Augsburg is post-classical Latin Augusta Vindelicum (4th cent.). In 1956 the name was used for the new polyester fibre produced by the company Hoechst.
