单词 transignification
释义

transignificationn.

Brit. /ˌtrɑːnsɪɡnᵻfᵻˈkeɪʃn/, /ˌtransɪɡnᵻfᵻˈkeɪʃn/, U.S. /ˌtræn(t)ˌsɪɡnəfəˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/
Forms: 1900s– transignification, 1900s– transsignification.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: trans- prefix, signification n.
Etymology: < trans- prefix + signification n., after post-classical Latin transsignificatio (1965 in the passage translated in quot. 1965, or earlier), perhaps itself after French transsignification (1957 or earlier in this sense). The French term was used by several prominent Roman Catholic theologians, e.g. Edward Schillebeeckx and Hans Urs von Balthasar, from the 1950s. It is unlikely that they intended an allusion to a much earlier use (early 17th cent.) in French in the form transignification, since that word occurs in a polemical work by the Protestant theologian Michel de Faucheur who attacked the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation, and is used with reference to the words of institution, not to the matter of the sacrament itself.
Theology.
The change in signification of the bread and wine that occurs during the Eucharist so that they come to signify the body and blood of Christ.Often contrasted with transubstantiation n. (in which the substance of the bread and wine changes). Cf. transfinalization n. (in which the purpose of the bread and wine changes).

1965 tr. Pope Paul VI in Pope Speaks 10 311 It is not permissible..to discuss the mystery of transubstantiation without mentioning what the Council of Trent had to say about the marvelous conversion of the whole substance of the bread into the Body and the whole substance of the wine into the Blood of Christ, as if they involve nothing more than ‘transignification’ or ‘transfinalization’ as they call it.
1968 J. M. Powers Eucharistic Theol. iv. 170 It is sometimes proposed that the idea of transsignification is presented as an alternative to the traditional theological idea of transsubstantiation.
1983 M. F. Wiles Faith & Myst. God iii. 38 The approach in terms of trans-signification or establishment of new meaning can make the same point in a more constructive way.
2014 J. C. Mudd Eucharist as Meaning v. 182 Theologies of transignification emphasize that bread already has a meaning related to the nourishment and fellowship of a meal.
