Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French acidité; Latin aciditat-, aciditas.
Etymology: < French acidité (1545 in Middle French) or its etymon post-classical Latin aciditat-, aciditas acidic substance (5th cent.) < classical Latin acidus sour (see acid adj.) + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare slightly later acid adj.

Also: the degree to which a substance, medium, etc., is acid (acid adj. 2a), esp. (Chemistry) as measured by hydrogen-ion concentration or pH. Also: an instance of acid properties, an acid substance. Cf. acid adj. 1a, 2a.
