Etymology: < modern Latin trapezoïdēs, < late Greek τραπεζοειδής , neuter τραπεζοειδές table-like (Proclus 450), < τράπεζα table: see -oid suffix. Compare French trapézoïde (1652 in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter).

a. A quadrilateral figure no two of whose sides are parallel. (Often called by English writers (in 19th cent.) trapezium n.)This is the sense for which Proclus introduced the term τραπεζοειδές; it is retained in French trapézoïde, German trapezoïd, etc. See etymological note to trapezium n.
