Etymology: < brotherly adj. + -ness suffix.In sense 1 chiefly translating classical Latin frāternitās fraternity n. in its post-classical use (from the 4th century onwards) as a form of address.
1. Christian Church. With possessive adjective, as your brotherliness. A title of respect or form of address used by one ecclesiastical dignitary of high rank to another, esp. a bishop. historical in later use.Now usually with capital initial.In quots. eOE1, eOE2 rendering post-classical Latin fraternitas in a letter of Pope Gregory I to Augustine, Archbishop of Canterbury.
