Brit. /əˌsɪdᵻfᵻˈkeɪʃn/, U.S. /əˌsɪdəfəˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/, /æˌsɪdəfəˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/

Etymology: < acidify v. (see -fication suffix), after French acidification (1786 in the passage translated in quot. 1788).
The action or process of making something (more) acidic; conversion into an acid; addition of acid. In later use spec.: the ongoing increase in acidity (or reduction in alkalinity) of a habitat or ecosystem (especially the ocean); esp. in ocean acidification. Cf. acidify v.Ocean acidification is chiefly the result of increasing levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide dissolving in the water. Acidification of fresh water and soils has more complex causes, which include acid rain caused by the release of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere.
