Brit. /ˈtrani/, U.S. /ˈtræni/
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: transvestite n., transgender n., transsexual n., -y suffix6.
Etymology: < tran- (in transvestite n., transgender n., transsexual n.) + -y suffix6.
Frequently derogatory and now often offensive (see note at main sense).
A transvestite. Also: a transgender (or transsexual) woman.Although in early use typically regarded as a colloquial synonym of transvestite, many of the people referred to by this word in the past would now probably be regarded as transgender women.
