Etymology: < trans- prefix + Vaal, the name of a large tributary of the Orange River in South Africa.The territory historically known as the Transvaal lies to the north of the Vaal River, which separates the Transvaal from the Free State province (formerly the Orange Free State). In 1994 the Transvaal was divided up, its territory now constituting the provinces of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, the eastern part of North West province, and a small area of north-western KwaZulu-Natal.
attributive. Of or relating to the southern African Boer republic (1852–1900) or (subsequently) to the South African province (1910–94) of this name.
