Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: train n.3, -y suffix1.
Etymology: < train n.3 + -y suffix1. Compare Dutch tranig (1726), German tranig (first half of the 19th cent. as †thranicht), Swedish tranig (1675), Danish (now regional) tranig, trannig (a1745; the usual Danish adjective is tranet (early 19th cent.)).
Now rare.
Having the quality of train oil; (of taste or flavour) rank and fishy. Also: rich in train oil.
