Etymology: < Old French tre(s)geteo(u)r (12th cent. in Godefroy) a juggler, mountebank, agent-noun of tre(s)geter to cast across or to and fro < Latin type *tra(ns)jectāre , < trans- prefix + jactāre to throw, cast: see traject n. Compare Italian tragettatore juggler; and, for sense, cast n. 24, caster n. 1.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈtregetour.

One who works magic or plays tricks by sleight of hand; a conjurer; a juggler; hence, a trickster, a deceiver.
