Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin tragulus , -ine suffix1; Latin Tragulus , -ine suffix1.
Etymology: In sense A. 1 < scientific Latin tragulus, specific name (M. Lichtenstein 1812, in Gesellsch. naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin Mag. 6 176; probably < ancient Greek τράγος he-goat (see tragus n.) + classical Latin -ulus -ulus suffix) + -ine suffix1. In senses A. 2 and B. < scientific Latin Tragulus, genus name (see tragule n.) + -ine suffix1; in later use after Tragulina, infraorder name (W. H. Flower 1883, in Proc. Zool. Soc. 51 182).

1. Designating a former group of small antelopes related to the steenbok, Raphicerus campestris (formerly known as Antilope tragulus). Obsolete. rare.

2. Originally: relating to or resembling the chevrotains or mouse deer (family Tragulidae). In later use: spec. of or relating to the infraorder Tragulina, which comprises the chevrotains and extinct relatives.
