Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Tragulus , -id suffix3.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Tragulus, genus name (see tragule n.) + -id suffix3, after Tragulidae, family name (A. Milne-Edwards 1864, in Ann. des sci. nat. 2 157). Compare German Traguliden, plural noun (1872 or earlier).
Chiefly Palaeontology.
